As the shopping season approaches and the media bugle heralds the death of the high street, what exactly is the state of play with e-tailing? Here’s a fast fact for every day of Christmas!

1. E-commerce is expected to account for one third of consumer spending by 2010. [EPS]
2. According to IMRG [the Internet Media in Retail Group], around 25% of all UK shopping could be done via the internet by 2009.
3. By 2009 the market is predicted to be worth £80bn. In addition, a further 20% of retail purchases could be influenced by research online prior to purchase. [EPS]
4. Profitability among retail sites up by 20% on 2003. In the UK 72% of retail web sites are profitable compared with 53% last year. [Source: Actinic]
5. Of those companies with a web site, ecommerce adoption has risen from 27% in 2003 to 42% in 2004, but remains low overall, with only 3% of all companies enabling orders to be placed on a website. [Actinic]
6. The continuing low rate of ecommerce adoption coupled with continued growth in online shopping heralds a significant business opportunity.
7. Ecommerce is a popular choice among entrepreneurs and small businesses: 40% of ecommerce businesses are online only startups & 75% of ecommerce sites are run by companies with 10 employees or less. [Actinic]

Drop off rates are related to product consideration time (the time the consumer thought about buying the product) higher consideration products such as finance or computer electronics have showed an 80% drop off rate where as low consideration products such as health & beauty and recreation have a drop off rate of below 40%.
